Attack Chain

In Warhammer 40k: Darktide, an attack chain is the sequence of different attacks (light, heavy, special) a melee weapon performs when continuously attacking, creating a unique "combo" that varies by weapon type. By successfully chaining attacks, players can effectively perform different actions, such as staggering single targets with a Strikedown attack or clearing large groups of enemies with Relentless and Vanguard attacks.

How It Works

Sequence of attacks:

Instead of just repeating the same swing, each consecutive attack in a chain will trigger a different attack pattern and type, such as a diagonal swing or an overhead strike.

Weapon-specific patterns:

Every melee weapon has its own distinct attack chain and patterns, like a Katachan Devil's Claw Sword with its three-attack light chain, or a Crucis Thunder Hammer with its specific pattern for single targets and staggering crowds.

Importance of chaining:

Successfully executing these chains maximizes damage and control, allowing players to target single enemies effectively or manage multiple enemies at once.

Types of Attacks in a Chain

The specific attacks in a weapon's chain include:

  • Light attacks: A sequence of quick, standard attacks.

  • Heavy attacks: A slower, more powerful attack that can be chained from a light attack to change the weapon's behavior.

  • Special attacks: Unique actions, like the revved up nature of a chain weapon's special ability or a thrust from a push attack.

How to Break a Chain

  • Waiting too long: Not hitting enemies quickly enough.

  • Getting hit: Taking damage from enemies.

  • Blocking: Using the block button.

  • Missing: Failing to hit a target with your attack.
